MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES: BYU FIRST AND SECOND REGIONS
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has established married and
single student stakes at BYU. These stakes have been divided into an
appropriate number of wards, providing opportunities for worship and service
in the Church. The following are important guidelines concerning ward
membership.
-
"Unmarried students who live in housing owned by the university should be
members of a student ward...that includes their living quarters in its
boundaries."
-
"Unmarried students who live away from home but off campus also may attend a
student ward...that includes their living quarters in its boundaries."
-
"Unmarried students who live with their parents should normally attend the
conventional wards in which they live." Exceptions must be approved by the
parents, by both bishops, and by both stake presidents.
-
"Normally, unmarried members who are not students should not attend student
wards. However, exceptions may be made in stakes without a single-member ward
if the bishop of the home ward feels that it would be in the member's best
interest to have the member's record transferred to a student ward. Such
exceptions must be approved by the parents (where appropriate), by both
bishops, and by both stake presidents."
-
Unmarried nonstudents living away from home may attend the student ward that
includes their living quarters in its boundaries.
-
Unmarried nonstudents living with their parents should attend the conventional
ward in which the family resides or a singles ward provided by their stake.
-
"Married students may become members of either a (married) student ward or the
conventional ward" that includes their living quarters in its boundaries.
-
Married students living in BYU married student housing attend the married
student ward that includes their living quarters in its boundaries.
-
Asian students may attend the Asian 1st Ward (married), the Asian
2d Ward (single), or the student ward that includes their living quarters in
its boundaries.

EXCEPTION TO MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES
If members wish to attend wards other than the ones in which they reside, the
bishops and stake presidents involved must submit a letter to the First
Presidency requesting approval.
